The Graduate Program in Civil Engineering (PPGEC) at the Federal University of Espírito Santo (UFES) began its activities in 1998 through Decision No. 80/97 of the UFES University Council, offering an academic master's degree in two areas of concentration: Structures and Civil Construction. In 2001, the third area of concentration, Transportation, was introduced, lasting from 2001 to 2019. Following a restructuring of the faculty in 2019 and aiming to better meet national evaluation criteria for graduate programs, PPGEC returned to operating with two areas of concentration, Structures and Civil Construction, starting in 2020.
In December 2024, its proposal for a Ph.D. program in Civil Engineering was approved by CAPES.
Areas of Concentration
The Civil Construction area encompasses research related to the built environment, particularly the characterization and performance of construction materials and components, as well as the development of more sustainable projects, materials, and construction processes. Additionally, this area includes transportation planning and operation.
The Structures area integrates knowledge in solid mechanics, soil mechanics, structural analysis and behavior, soil-structure interaction, and soil-atmosphere interaction. It also addresses the latest technical trends in structural and geotechnical engineering, including advanced experimental analysis skills, numerical methods, and computational simulation, broadly covering the challenges and technical solutions in superstructure and infrastructure projects.
Regional Impact and Faculty
PPGEC is the only stricto sensu graduate program in Civil Engineering in the state of Espírito Santo and, as such, plays a significant role in training qualified professionals in the region. The program has attracted professionals from various fields, including Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Architecture and Urbanism, Production Engineering, Geology, Chemistry, and Physics.
In accordance with the UFES General Graduate Regulations, PPGEC is directly affiliated with the Technological Center (CT), and its academic and administrative management is conducted by an academic council composed of the general coordinator, deputy coordinator, permanent faculty members, and student representatives, in compliance with UFES regulations.
PPGEC has a highly qualified faculty, consisting of Ph.D. holders trained at prestigious universities in Brazil, the United States, and Spain. During the 2017-2020 quadrennium, 33% of the permanent faculty members (four professors) were research productivity fellows: three were CNPq Productivity Research Fellows (Level 2), one was a CNPq Productivity Research Fellow (Level 1D), and another was a Productivity Fellow in Technological Development and Innovative Extension (DT).
In the 2021-2024 quadrennium, the number of research fellows increased to seven, including three CNPq productivity fellows, four BPC fellows from FAPES, and one privately funded project fellow. The number of permanent faculty members is currently 15, including five early-career faculty members. The program actively encourages faculty development by promoting participation in postdoctoral research programs. In 2023, one faculty member completed a postdoctoral research internship in the United States and Italy, leading to the signing of a cooperation agreement that fosters ongoing international collaborations.
PPGEC Mission
Through research, teaching, and outreach activities, PPGEC aims to promote the development and dissemination of research on topics of societal interest within the fields of Civil Construction and Structures. The program contributes to scientific advancement, technological innovation, and the resolution of civil engineering challenges at regional, national, and international levels.
By providing high-quality education to its students, PPGEC seeks to train highly qualified professionals and researchers for academic teaching and research, as well as for applied research in the industrial and commercial sectors. Consequently, the program meets the needs of both academia and the market by fostering research and development (R&D) activities in regional, national, and international civil engineering sectors.
PPGEC Objectives
The general objective of PPGEC is to train highly qualified professionals for scientific research and technological innovation to meet the demands of academic and professional markets in civil engineering. To achieve this goal, in addition to its existing master's program, the establishment of a Ph.D. program is necessary. The specific objectives are:
a) To train faculty members for higher education to support the quantitative and qualitative expansion of Civil Engineering education, particularly at the state level but also nationally;
b) To foster collaboration between PPGEC and graduate programs at other national and international institutions;
c) To train professionals at the master's and Ph.D. levels to work in public agencies, industries, companies, and consulting services in the fields of civil construction and structural engineering;
d) To promote a diverse and inclusive environment that welcomes students from different backgrounds and perspectives, contributing to a rich and diverse academic community;
e) To develop technologies and products and master the use of advanced techniques and methodologies;
f) To strengthen UFES institutionally by establishing a solid teaching and research program in Civil Engineering;
g) To contribute to regional and national development through partnerships with private entities, municipalities, and state agencies to address challenges requiring advanced studies;
h) To encourage and enhance interactions between PPGEC faculty and students with undergraduate students, fostering the discovery and appreciation of scientific research and technological innovation talents;
i) To promote research development and student-faculty collaboration in scientific and technological research within the various concentration areas of civil engineering;
j) To support the dissemination and applicability of scientific research and technological innovation through faculty and student participation in conferences, research networks, high-impact publications, and the development of products and patents;
k) To foster university-industry collaboration with public and private enterprises, government agencies, and third-sector organizations;
l) To pursue the internationalization of PPGEC through scientific cooperation with universities from various countries.
